Hockey Pitches – Aspects to Consider
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has five approved categories for hockey pitches.
The type of surface you choose will depend upon the standard of hockey being played by your club. For most clubs a Category 2 to Category 4 surface will be suitable:
- Category 2 – national and top-level games
- Category 3/4 – national, regional and club play
Category 2 hockey fields use a non-filled wet or dry turf from suppliers including Polytan, Tigerturf, Greenfields, Lano and SIS.
Category 3/4 hockey fields will be sand dressed synthetic turf, with an option of using rain guns for a quicker surface.
When you are planning a new hockey pitch, it is also important to consider the sustainability of a water-based pitch. There are ways to mitigate the amount of water used or it may be more appropriate to look at the options available for dry pitches.
I can help you choose the most suitable pitch surface for the category you require and consider the options that are appropriate.
