Rugby Pitches – Aspects to Consider
The importance of the surface ‘system’ that is used is perhaps more critical for rugby than most other sports.
Competitive rugby can be played on artificial turf providing that the surface ‘system’ provides the necessary performance requirements. (IRB Regulation 22 – Artificial Playing Surfaces.)
The surface ‘system’ needs to:
- Involve the combined effect of both the synthetic turf surface (and associated infill) and the underlying rubber shockpad layer
- Achieve the necessary health and safety requirements, in particular the Head Impact Criteria (HIC).
The only artificial turf that can achieve these requirements is the longer pile 3g type.
The development of 3g turf systems that offer both World Rugby and FIFA compliance has meant that 3g synthetic turf rugby pitches can, if required, also be used for football. This can help facility operators to maximise the use of their facility.
