Football Pitches – Aspects to Consider
There are a myriad of approved surfaces that can be used for football.
When planning a new football pitch, you may need to consider the following:
- Infill
- Underlay
- Drainage system
- Pile yarn
3g surfaces have sand and rubber crumb spread all over them to improve the surface (which is called the ‘infill’). They are also typically fitted with an underlying drainage system and some shock-absorbing underlay (to make it kinder on the joints). A 3g surface is much nicer to play on than a 2g surface.
Pile yarn is one of the most important aspects of the surfacing system as it influences the playing characteristics, durability and visual appearance of the pitch. The pile yarn could be a fibrillated or monofilament yarn. The number of piles can vary and is normally specified as the number of ends per tuft; the higher the number, the denser each tuft.
When planning a new football pitch, you also need to consider the combination between Pile length, Pile weight, Primary backing and Secondary backing.
What is the difference between a 3g football pitch and a 4g football pitch? You can read more about that here.
My technical knowledge and experience enables me to help you choose between the different types of surfaces.
